From the detail of the voyages, it is apparent that the date of building is at variance with that provided by the Alexander Turnbull Library. It is my consideration that the photograph above would have been taken while on one of the Dunedin voyages, 1881, 1883, 1884, 1885 or 1898. See my references to Henry Brett's WHITE WINGS and Ian Nicholson's "LOG of LOGS" on my Waitangi Index page. My particular interest is in the 1878 voyage (number 5) to Lyttelton, Oct 1878. |
From the catalogue at the Alexander Turnbull Library, we can read (quoted in part):- David Alexander De Maus. of South Devon, England;1847-1925 - arrived in New Zealand by the 'Caribou' in 1867 and set up a photography business in Port Chalmers. According to Harwicke Knight in `Photography in New Zealand; a social and technical history', 1971, he was known to have been actively taking pictures between 1875 and 1899. This is offered as an aid for the dating of photographs displayed here. {BEP} |
