Sarah SMART Headstone Replaced - Feb 2008.

Joan SHEPHERD of Taupo has lead a group of descendants of Sarah SMART to replace the headstone, which had by 2007 completely eroded away. Sarah's headstone at St Saviours graveyard on Kirk Road at Templeton, (near Christchurch, New Zealand) appears to be mudstone and was useless as a memorial to one of Canterbury's most industrious first settlers. Sarah, who came here with husband William & 12 children from Moulton, Northumberland, was a matron on the ship Randolph that arrived in 16 Dec 1850.

I have a list of 135 descendants of Sarah - (I don't have them all) - with 64 spouses over seven generations.

Sarah, after arriving on the "RANDOLPH" in 1850 at the age of 40 died in 1873 while William was 45 upon arrival and died just three years later.
He is buried in Barbadoes Street Cemetery, Christchcurch, CBY, NZ.
